Online Safety
Whether your PC is having problems or if it's just enjoying the sunny breeze, here are a few things that you can easily check by yourself to make sure that your PC is reasonably protected against the most common forms of annoyances:
- Make sure you use a router. If you have broadband internet, Never plug your pc directly into the cable / dsl modem.
- Update your OS on a regular basis.
- Keep your anti-virus software up to date. Run it on a weekly basis or configure it to run automatically since most anti-virus manufactures release new virus updates every week.
- If you have not started yet, use Firefox internet browser. It's almost like having a bolt lock on your front door compared to Internet Explorer.
- Never give out any bank or account information via threatening emails, and do not answer phone calls requesting personal information either. Call the number or email the address from an entity's official website, by typing it into your browser directly. (NOT clicking on a link)
- Things like the Nigerian 419 Scam, when it's too good to be true, it most likely is. The same principle as not to take candies from a stranger, except the internet could be a much worse place.
- Do not click on a file you don't know. Refer to our PC Extensions List to find out what really is in that file.
